What Bungalows Can Tell
What Bungalows Can Tell is the result of extensive artistic and architectural research into the village of Kaliurang (Yogyakarta region, Indonesia). This publication brings together several essays and a series of photographs that critically explore the spatial, transformative effects of globalisation and heritage formation at the local scale. It looks specifically at the colonial bungalows—what can they tell?—and the stories around them, asking how they were used in the past, what their function is in the present, and what they can represent in the future. In doing so, this publication aims to take into account the colonial history of the village, while bringing to the fore the voices, stories and local wisdom that are often eclipsed by more prominent forms of Western knowledge production.
How to work with a bilingual book?
It was important for us to have Indonesian as the main language, but at the same time not to separate it from English, for example by having each language on a different page of the book. The texts are set in Frasa, created by the Indonesian type foundry Tokotype.
